Smoky Cape Lighthouse stands on one of the highest headlands on the NSW coast, at the northern end of Hat Head National Park about fifteen minutes’ drive south-east of South West Rocks. The 1891 tower looks north over empty national park beaches and south across Trial Bay, and from about May to November the humpbacks pass close enough to watch from the lawn. It is also one of the few lighthouses in the state where you can stay the night, which is why the accommodation here books out the way it does.
Staying at the lighthouse: the keepers’ cottages
The two assistant keepers’ cottages beside the tower date from 1891 and are let as whole self-contained houses, each with three bedrooms sleeping up to eight. There is also a small bed and breakfast wing for adults, with rooms from about $350 a night. The cottages run roughly $550 to $750 a night with a three night minimum, stretching to four nights in school holidays and five at Christmas.
That is a lot of money and a lot of nights, and it is still hard to get a booking, because there are only two cottages and the position is genuinely unrepeatable: sunrise over the sea, whales through the window, kangaroos on the grass, and the beam sweeping overhead after dark. If it is in the budget and the dates line up, book it and do not overthink it. Bookings are direct through the cottages’ own site; they are not on the booking sites.
Booked out or too dear? Work outward from the cape
The good news is that the lighthouse sits at the end of a short road with some of the coast’s best accommodation scattered along the way back to town.
Five minutes away: Smoky Cape Retreat
An adults-only guest house in the bush at Arakoon, midway between the lighthouse and Trial Bay Gaol, with a saltwater pool, a tennis court, spa suites and long-time owner-hosts who collect glowing reviews year after year. Ten minutes away: Arakoon and the gaol
Campers get the postcard option: the NPWS Trial Bay Gaol campground sits directly below the old gaol walls beside the beach, with resident kangaroos for neighbours. No pets, and it books out well ahead for holidays.
Nearby, NPWS also lets Little Bay Cottage, a simple two bedroom cottage at Arakoon a few steps from the turquoise water of Little Bay. It is bring your own linen and books through the local Elders agent rather than online, which keeps it under the radar.
Fifteen minutes away: South West Rocks
The town has the most choice on this stretch of coast: the flash villas at Salt, renovated pub rooms opposite Horseshoe Bay at the Seabreeze, motels, and two big holiday parks. The Hat Head catch
Hat Head village sits inside the same national park, and on the map it looks close to the lighthouse. By road it is not: there is no coastal road through the park, so the drive loops inland via Kinchela and takes around 40 minutes. Stay at Hat Head for Hat Head, not as a lighthouse base.
What to do once you are there
The drive up to the lighthouse car park is worth it for the view alone, and the walks are better again. The Jack Perkins track drops from the lighthouse down to the empty sand of North Smoky Beach, and strong walkers can carry on along the coast towards the gaol at Arakoon. When to go
Whale season, roughly May to November, is the smart window: the headland is at its best, the cottages and the town are easier to book, and prices sit well below summer. Summer and the school holidays are lovely too, but everything from the cottages to the campgrounds needs booking months ahead.
