Nambucca Heads sits where the Nambucca River winds out to the sea, just north of Macksville and about 35 minutes south of Coffs Harbour. It is a relaxed, slightly old-fashioned river town, best known for the V-Wall, a long breakwall covered in thousands of painted rocks. Add calm river beaches, ocean surf, and headland lookouts over the river mouth, and it makes an easy, unhurried base on the Coffs Coast.
Why stay in Nambucca Heads
Nambucca is the kind of place you slow down in. The river is the heart of it: calm, warm water for swimming, kayaking and fishing, with the surf beaches just around the headland. It draws returning holiday families and retirees more than a party crowd, so it stays quiet and friendly. There is enough in town for a comfortable stay, and Coffs Harbour is a short drive north if you want more.
The V-Wall
The V-Wall is Nambucca’s signature. The half-kilometre breakwall at the river mouth is covered in painted rocks: holiday memories, messages, tributes and artwork left by visitors over the years, so it is a sort of open-air gallery you can walk the length of. Bring a paintbrush and you can add your own. The V-Wall Tavern sits right at the riverfront if you want a meal or a sunset drink looking over it.
The beaches and the river
North of the river mouth, Main Beach is warm, patrolled in season and good for a family swim or a surf. Smaller Shelly Beach and a string of coves sit closer to the headland, and the calm river itself is lovely for a paddle or a float. South of the river, Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park has wilder surf and beach fishing, and is managed together with the local Gumbaynggirr people.
Lookouts and walks
The headland lookouts are worth the short drive. Captain Cook Lookout and Rotary Lookout take in the river mouth and a long sweep of coast, and from about May to November you can watch humpback whales pass offshore. Down at sea level, the Nyambagga walking track and the coastal boardwalks link the V-Wall, Shelly Beach and the river through the bush, with signs about the area’s Aboriginal heritage and the local plants and wildlife.

Good to know
Nambucca Heads is bigger than the little villages further south but still low-key, with a supermarket, shops and cafes in town, so you can stock up easily. Summer and the school holidays are the busy season. It makes an easy stop on a Pacific Highway road trip, and a good base for day trips up to Coffs Harbour or inland into the Nambucca Valley.
Local tip: walk the V-Wall near sunset, when the light is good on the painted rocks and the river mouth.

The V-Wall and Nyambagga track loop
The walk that ties the town together. Head out along the V-Wall, the breakwall covered in decades of painted rocks, then pick up the Nyambagga track and the coastal boardwalks through the bush, climb to the Captain Cook and Rotary lookouts for wide views over the river mouth, and loop back. Mostly easy, with a few steps and short climbs.

Gordon Park rainforest and foreshore
A pocket of riverside rainforest right in town, with a shaded boardwalk through tall figs and palms that links to the foreshore path along the Nambucca River. Flat and easy, and a good one with kids or on a hot day.

Captain Cook Lookout and Shelly Beach
If you would rather not walk the full loop, drive up to the headland lookouts for the view, then take the path down to Shelly Beach, a sheltered cove below the cliffs that is calmer than the main surf beach. Whales pass offshore from about May to November.
