South West Rocks is one of the easier towns on the Mid North Coast to visit with a dog. There are two proper off-leash beaches, a purpose-built dog exercise area, a creekside caravan park that treats dogs as regular guests, and holiday houses with real backyards. There is also a catch: some of the best country here, the gaol headland, Little Bay and Smoky Cape, is national park, and dogs cannot set foot in it. Here is how the town works with a dog, and where to stay.
The dog beaches
Kempsey Shire Council signposts the off-leash zones, and the council’s dog page has maps of each one. The default everywhere else in town is a leash and effective control, with red bins and bag dispensers along the foreshore.
Back Creek Beach
The locals’ pick, on the calm side of town near the boat ramp. Dogs stay on the leash from the carpark, then run free once you are on Back Creek Beach itself. The creek is flat, shallow at the edges and out of the swell, which makes it the spot for dogs that treat water as a lifestyle rather than a challenge. It is also right beside the pet friendly caravan park, so some guests never need the car at all.
Main Beach, along Trial Bay
The big one. From the surf club the rule is leash on until you reach the signed off-leash zone, and from there the sand runs long and wide around Trial Bay. This is a working beach in the old sense: boats launch off it, 4WDs come and go, and in autumn the mullet crews haul nets straight onto the sand, so keep the recall sharp. On a weekday morning outside holidays you can have most of it to yourselves.

A purpose-built dog exercise area on the edge of town with a mix of on-leash and off-leash zones. Handy for a first-night run after the drive up, and for mornings when the beach weather is filthy.
Where dogs cannot go
The headland country that makes South West Rocks famous is nearly all national park, and dogs are not permitted in NSW national parks at all. Around here that means no dogs at Trial Bay Gaol and its campground, Little Bay, Gap Beach, the Arakoon headland walks, Smoky Cape Lighthouse and the whole of Hat Head National Park. Council adds sporting fields, play areas and anywhere within 10 metres of food to the no-dog list. Horseshoe Bay, the little swimming beach in the middle of town, is best left to the swimmers: the dog beaches are better for dogs anyway.
Plan the trip so the humans see the gaol and the lighthouse in shifts while the dog rests somewhere air-conditioned, or pick accommodation where a dog left alone for an hour is allowed and comfortable. Most parks and houses ask that pets are never left unattended, so shifts it is.

Ingenia Holidays South West Rocks: the dog pick
The creekside park about a kilometre from the shops is the obvious base: pet friendly sites and designated pet cabins, a dog wash, and the leash-free stretch of Back Creek a short walk away. The first dog stays at no charge and the park is set up for paws rather than merely tolerant of them. Two catches worth knowing: dogs stay out of the communal areas, and pets are not permitted over the Christmas and early January peak, so this is a base for the other eleven and a half months.
NRMA South West Rocks Holiday Resort: the family compromise
The big family park on the edge of town takes pets year-round on its designated pet sites, with a small-dog trial in a handful of cabins and villas. Everything needs pre-approval at booking, there is a nightly cleaning fee and a bond for cabins, leads are required throughout, and dogs are banned from the waterpark and the other common areas. In practice it works best when the kids want the water park and the dog mostly wants the beach.
Horseshoe Bay Holiday Park: beachfront, off-peak only
The council-run park on the town beach takes one small dog per site, sites only, outside the high season, with approval at booking. If the dates and the dog size fit, waking up on that foreshore is hard to beat.
Holiday houses with yards
For a week or a group, a house wins. The local agents let most of the town’s houses and units, and Raine & Horne’s holiday range includes a proper pet friendly category, some with fenced yards. The best houses go early, and pet friendly ones go earliest of all, so book months ahead for school holidays.
Adults plus dog
Smoky Cape Retreat, the adults-only guest house out at Arakoon, sometimes takes dogs by arrangement. Ask before you book rather than after.
If it is all booked: Hat Head
Twenty-five minutes south (40 by road from the lighthouse side), the tiny village of Hat Head has its own off-leash zone, from beach access 6 north along the sand, and one of the coast’s best pet friendly houses in Muller’s Cottage: a big fenced yard, dogs stay free with the firm rule that they live outdoors, and the beach 250 metres away. Practical notes
- Leash by default. Off-leash is only inside the signed zones; everywhere else in the shire a leash is the law, and rangers do patrol in holidays.
- Summer sand burns. By mid-morning in January the dry sand is hot enough to hurt pads. Walk early, test it with your own hand, and carry water.
- Ticks are real here. The coastal scrub is paralysis tick country, especially spring and summer. Keep prevention up to date and check the dog daily.
- Book the dog in writing. Every park and agent above wants pets declared at booking, and most will not allow pets left unattended. Say the dog is coming; surprises end badly in peak season.
