Not every swim has to mean battling the shore break. Some of the best water on the Mid North Coast is calm, clear and shallow: creeks and protected bays that are made for kids, floats and a lazy afternoon. Here are the spots we go back to.
Korogoro Creek, Hat Head

The creek runs right through the village of Hat Head to the sea. Around high tide it turns clear and blue, calm and warm, and shallow enough at the edges for little ones to splash about for hours. Bring a paddleboard and you can follow it upstream into the national park.

Horseshoe Bay, South West Rocks

Tucked behind the breakwall in the centre of South West Rocks, Horseshoe Bay is one of the safest swims on the coast. The headland and the wall keep it calm, and it is a short walk from town. Just around at Arakoon, the sheltered turquoise of Little Bay is lovely for a snorkel.

Killick Creek, Crescent Head

Right by the town, Killick Creek opens to the sea in a calm lagoon with a footbridge across it. Near high tide it is a safe, shallow swim, and you can keep half an eye on the surfers out at the point while the kids paddle.

A few tips for creek swims
- Time the tide. The creeks are clearest and deepest near high tide, and can run to sand or mud flats at low tide.
- Bring shade. There is not always a lot of it, so pack a tent or umbrella for the middle of the day.
- Check the signs. Conditions change, so follow any local signage, especially after rain.
